Can Touch This

Here’s a good idea that mixes report writing with Minority Report.

If you have a MacBook Pro, your keyboard has backlighting in dim conditions. In the pursuit of writing odd hacks for every facet of personal computing, a new app called KeySpazz makes your keyboard backlighting respond to key presses. I’m using it now, and I have a cost-effective, bland sensation of having computer touch response. If I drop $2, though, I can have the real thing by learning from this guy, who created an accurate touch interface with blue dye and an iSight.

The Decline and Fall of BLOCKQUOTE

The greatest undertaking involved in setting up a new site isn’t picking up new technologies. This blog system set itself up, for the most part. Now that I’m starting fresh, I’m tossing all my bad coding habits out the window. <center> tags, gone! <blockquote>? Died with the dinosaurs. As for <b> and <i>, I’m taking those with me to the grave. That one indulgence aside, everything will operate under CSS. It probably won’t mean much to the average reader. People who have read (and seriously overanalysed) my blog for years might have noticed my inability to format consistently. When I quoted text, I tried all sorts of crazy fonts, backgrounds, and tables, and never reached a conclusive HTML combo that screams ‘Yay! I’m a quotation!’

No more. From the first time you see quoted text or code here, it will not just stand out as quoted text, it will scream that text in your ear with a megaphone.

Fascinated by petty HTML musings? Yuh-huh, I thought not. Better things next time.

At Last! After Ten Thousand Years, I’m Free!

Greetings from the second incarnation of the spamguy blog! Things will remain volatile for a nice long time: logos may come and go, blog systems may be dumped in favour of others, colour schemes may receive juggling. The very physical location of this data will probably be tossed around! Since 2003 my blog was hosted by the Britons at Blog City. From here on, the text you read is stored in a MySQL database on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. Many thanks to Case Filer for providing the goods needed to set up WordPress! The gratitude may be short-lived, for I seek to declare server autonomy eventually.

Are you checking my blog every 15 minutes, but not keen on typing the superstring http://filer.case.edu/wro1/blog into your web browser? I’m pleased to report negotiations have wrapped up with the previous owner of spamguy.com. Once ownership has expired, I will arrange it so spamguy.com points straight here. But wait wait: why stop at a petty blog when I have so many other half-baked ideas that need a short, punchy domain name to expose them?

Lots of goodies to expose, so toss that Blog City bookmark and say hello to sweet, sweet innovation!
